There are several major cities around the world where the streets are thought to be paved with gold. While this is almost exclusively meant in a metaphorical sense, the statement is almost literal in Dubai’s famous Gold Souk, which is located in the Deira business district. Dubai has long been known for its abundance of cheap gold, years before the Emirates began reaping any oil benefits. The Gold Souk is, without a doubt, the world’s premier destination for purchasing jewellery, and it is estimated that at any given time, around ten tonnes of gold are present in the Souk. While some from the West may be concerned that the relatively cheap prices and haggling are an indication of poor quality, the government keeps tight controls on quality. This means that anything purchased within the Souk, be it gold, diamonds, platinum or even silver, are sure to be authentic.
